inspired by the homonymous novel of Yomar Kaniuk 1968, Adam Resurrected film finally becomes, after more than 40 years since the book at the hands of Paul Schrader, writer of mythical Taxi Driver and Raging Bull , to name a few. "Finally," because many directors had already failed in order to complete a script worthy of the name (even Orson Welles was chosen for the lead role in one of these attempts), who could take the thin wire, scathing and sadistic, with the controversial novel, which had impressed critics and skeptics.
The difficult issue to overcome, or at least of his attempt, a tragedy of the scale of the Holocaust is an impervious barrier to be addressed, perhaps impossible. Many were the discussions of socio-psychological mold with the aim to define if it were possible even just imagine the pain experienced by deportees to concentration camps, let alone tell it. And even more so over it. The ghosts, fears, inner dramas that some people bring with them are wounds that hardly a mental institution for help survivors heal.
Adam Stein, played by Jeff Goldblum in an impressive manner, is just one of these survivors, and its path of psychological rehabilitation is attempted alternates between the clinic where he is under observation and flashbacks of the concentration camp where he was imprisoned and where he was literally "dog" to the manic fantasy-style "imperial" of the master Klein, Willem Dafoe himself in good shape. Adam before the war was an artist, ran a personal and original, these days, one man show into a kind of circus in Berlin (the irony improvised a lot of "guinea pigs" for his tricks a night it was the master), then the war, the deportation, the drama. seeing the tear away from his family before his eyes while he is forced to become a melancholic soundtrack with the violin in the way of his wife and daughter to death, marks him forever. Stands alone and you will be right when, mental institute, he encounters another "dog" as he was in the past, a "special project" of the doctor who kept him in care: a little boy kept tied in a room secret forced to live just as Adam had done. The two miraculously able to come closer together and begin a path of growth and redemption, which will both be aware of the real need, for themselves, overcoming the mental and psychological closure that followed them for who knows how long.
In terms of cinematic hits the dominant use of shades of white, as if to indicate that the glimmer of hope alive even under precarious mental stability. The color choice is, however, in flashbacks dark abyss of nights in the concentration camp, where the shadow of fear and desperation help us restore the tragic sense prevails. The light then it is not clear or if you indicate hope and it is folly this uncertainty must be placed on the point where the director skillfully played, the tears that the protagonist struggles to hide, the repeated psychological battles with nurses and other patients, anger mixed with pity that leaked from the relationship with young new friend are some of the narrative devices that allowed Paul Schrader to complete the work in an intelligent and introspective providing interesting insights.
The film, still looking for final distribution in Italy, will be scheduled in the dubbed version in Italian cinema Aquila in Rome, December 3 to 16.
